Geneva airport (commonly known as Cointrin Airport) is situated just two and a half miles northwest of the city centre.
Geneva?s airport only has one Terminal , but it can be accessed from both France and Switzerland due to its location. In fact, passengers from France do not even have to go through Swiss border (technically) if they stay on the correct side of the airport.
If you are travelling with children or have any special requirements then leaving your booking until the arrival is something that should not be done. This is because your nessessary equipment (booster seats) may not be available without prior notice.
Car hire at Geneva Airport is difficult if you do not know what you are doing. There are two sectors, the French side and the Swiss side. It is suggested if you are going to France you rent in the French sector, and if you are going to Switzerland you rent in the Swiss sector.
When you land you will be on the Swiss side; therefore all you need to do is find the arrivals section. The hire companies are all next to the post office.
The car hire companies available on the Swiss side include; Avis, Budget , Europcar, Hertz, National and Sixt
When you land, make sure you go through the passport control and gather your luggage. Find your way to the arrivals' section (Swiss side), go up a level and pass customs on your right. If you have booked a car in the French sector you will need to show your car booking information in order to get through from the Swiss to the French side.
Car hire companies available in the French sector include; Avis, Europcar, Hertz, National/Citer and Sixt .
Be warned that if you rent your car on the Swiss side and bring it back to the French side then you may be charged a small fee (and vice versa).
The airport is accessed on the N1 motorway from the Swiss side. However, if you are entering from the French side you need to take the A40 to join the N1 and follow signs to Geneva to avoid entering the Swiss side of the airport. It is very well signposted so you should not come across a problem.
