In 1999, the Cantarelli family purchased an abandoned smallholding, known then as Podere Caiano,set in the countryside near the ancient hill town of Orvieto. They began the task of renovating the property, including several farmhouses dating back to the late 1800s. It was the start of a project that would see them create not only a winery but also accommodation for guests wanting to experience life at Lapone and they continue to host clients from all over the world.
The first of the new vines were planted in 2002 and today 20 hectares of the 35 hectare property are planted as vineyards. After a period of experimentation in vinification, Cantina Lapone was officially founded in 2011and takes its name from the valley where the winery is located.
Together, Piero and Ramona have succeeded in reinvigorating a place that was once forgotten and in doing so continue the rich winemaking heritage of the area.
