    Overview

The name of Capua is now found in the title of the modern city, Santa Maria Capua Vetere. Caserta and this once prosperous and lively Roman city are located a few kilometers apart. The Campano Amphitheater stands out for its remarkable state of preservation; some believe it served as an inspiration for the construction of Rome's Colosseum. Those interested may also visit the Gladiator Museum close by, which displays some decoration from the amphitheater along with a simulation of a real gladiator fight. Furthermore, at the Archaeological Museum one can admire artifacts that testify to Capua's ancient past. An unexpected discovery made during building works was Mitreo: this small site still contains frescoes and seating arrangements that take visitors back to 3rd century AD.
