Overview

The Abrolhos Islands are an archipelago located off the coast of Western Australia, between Geraldton and Kalbarri. The group consists of 122 islands, coral reefs, and shoals that span across approximately 100 kilometers of the Indian Ocean. From above, the islands appear as an infinite array of emerald jewels set against a turquoise sea. On a clear day, visitors are able to catch glimpses of dolphins and whales playing among the coral reefs that stretch across the islands. As they cruise through the air, they can take in views of hundreds of species of birds settling into their rookeries or soaring up towards the horizon. The Abrolhos Islands also have a storied history as one of Australia’s most notorious wreck sites. Over the years, numerous vessels have been lost offshore due to navigational errors or fierce storms. This has made them an attractive destination for treasure hunters hoping to find sunken gold and silver coins left behind by these wrecks.
