Overview
Nicknamed the pearl of the Atlantic, Essaouira has been known since the 14th century as Mogador. Located 170 km north of Agadir and surrounded by ramparts, it is referred to as the “City of Winds”. The UNESCO-listed whitewashed Medina with its blue doors and windows is truly a sight to behold. As Paul Claudel famously remarked: ''There is only one tower where I know I'd like to be locked up forever, even if it meant dying there rather than returning the keys - Mogador in Africa.''
This beautiful city continues to attract artists from around the world, particularly film makers who often choose Essaouira as their shooting location; Orson Welles' Othello being one such example, which was shot here in 1952.
