Overview
Hierapolis ("Holy City") was an ancient Greco-Roman city in Phrygia located on hot springs in South West Anatolia. Its ruins are adjacent to modern Pamukkale and the site is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Since the 2nd Century B.C.E., people have used the hot springs as a spa, some even retiring or passing away here.
Among its highlights are the large necropolis filled with sarcophagi, the main street including gates and latrines, cathedral, theatre and St. Philip's tomb; plus cascading hot springs known as Cotton Castle. Despite requiring an early departure from Antalya and late return, it is well worth taking the journey to experience this wonderful place.
