Hanoi served as the capital of French Indochina from 1902 to 1954. Then, when North and South Vietnam were separated, Hanoi was the capital of North Vietnam. Located in northern Vietnam, there are stronger Chinese influences than its southern counterpart. This is not surprising, though, as Hanoi had been ruled by the Chinese for over 1000 years.
Rapid expansion has seen the rise of skyscrapers, but the old quarter still exists, even if in street names only.
