Overview

The Lascaris War Rooms are Malta’s best kept secret of World War II, hidden deep beneath Valletta's massive fortifications.

In 1940 this secret complex of underground tunnels and chambers became the Advance Allied War Headquarters. Operation rooms for each three fighting services housed 1,000 people and soldiers coordinating the defence of Malta.

The greatest battles in the Mediterranean were also coordinated from here, including the 1943 Operation Husky Invasion of Sicily directed by General Eisenhower, Admiral Cunningham, Field Marshal Montgomery and Air Marshal Tedder.

After the war it became the Headquarters of the British Royal Navy’s Mediterranean Fleet, playing an active part during the 1956 Suez Crisis, and was put on full alert in the 1962 Cuban Missile Crisis.

Between 1967 and 1977 NATO used the complex as a Communication Centre for the interception of Soviet submarines in the Mediterranean.

The site has been restored to its former glory for the enjoyment of visitors.
