Castel dell'Ovo, or Egg Castle in English, is located on the peninsula of Megaride, of the Gulf of Naples. Its name originates from a legend about the Roman poet Virgil that claims he put a magical egg into the fortification’s foundations to maintain its strength and prevent it from destruction. It is known as the oldest standing fortress in Naples.
