Nxai Pan National Park lies on one of the Makgadikgadi Pan salt flats. Smaller pans fill up with water during the rain season, providing rich resources for wildlife. Common animals to be seen are zebras, lions, elephant, hyena, leopard, ostrich, wildebeest, spring book, impala, onyx, giraffe, cheetah, wild dog, bat, eared fox etc., with lots of birds.
Nxai Pan is particularly known for Baines' Baobabs. This bunch of extremely old baobab trees is a highlight for any visitor traveling to this place of Botswana. Seven huge baobab trees, named after the 19th century explorer Thomas Baines, are situated on an island overlooking and surrounded by the white, crusty Kudiakam pan. Thomas Baines stood here in 1863 and created the paintings on these trees.
