Overview
Hierapolis, known as the "Holy City," was an ancient Greco-Roman city situated in Phrygia, on hot springs in South West Anatolia. Its ruins are close to modern day Pamukkale and have been designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Since the 2nd Century B.C.E., people have gone to these hot springs for healing purposes, with some choosing to retire or pass away there.
Its attractions include a large necropolis filled with sarcophagi, main street gates and latrines, cathedral, theatre and St. Philips tomb; plus the Cotton Castle made of cascading hot springs. To visit this remarkable place we must leave Antalya early and return late but it is certainly worth it!
