Overview

This tour focuses on the exploration of two main archaeological sites in the region: Pompeii and Herculaneum, which were destroyed by the eruption of Mt. Vesuvius in 79 AD. These cities had considerable importance for the Roman Empire as they were flourishing economically and socially at that time. The major distinction between them is that Pompeii was more of a busy hub for merchants and voyagers, while Herculaneum was an affluent village inhabited by aristocrats and scholars. After lunch at a local eatery (drinks are not included), you will proceed to the ruins of Herculaneum. Audio-guides will be provided during both visits (licensed guide for groups bigger than 6 people). Entrance tickets are not included.

At the time of its dramatic eruption, Pompeii was home to around 11.000 inhabitants and Herculaneum had about 5.000 people living there. Various emperors and noblemen owned holiday villas in these cities. On one fateful day in 79 AD, an immense amount of ash buried the entire region within hours. Centuries later, in 1748, excavations started during the Bourbons government reign; such findings were met with great enthusiasm and had a major influence on neo-classicism throughout Europe. Today, the ruins of Pompeii are among the most visited archaeological sites worldwide while Herculaneum's Villa dei Papiri holds an extensive library of over 1800 papyrus scrolls.

Visit of the excavations (approx 2 hrs) and if time permits also of a coral and cameos factory to observe production processes conducted by expert artisans.
