Amalfi stands strong and independent among its peers as one of four Maritime Republics – the only one that once minted its own currency (the Tarì). The front-runner of these coastal towns has deep historical roots shrouded in legend that tell us it takes its name from a nymph beloved by Hercules who was buried here at the gods’ behest. Dominating the square rises majestically a Duomo which holds within its walls evidence of different eras and cultures that have shaped it; tangible proof being found in the baroque interior juxtaposed against an Arab-Norman exterior.
