It served as a crossroads for travelers and commerce from the Cayster and Maeander Valleys, Galatia, Euphrates and Mesopotamia; all roads led to Rome via Ephesus. When Christians were being taken from Asia for execution in the Roman arenas, Ignatius called it the Roadway of Martyrs.
