What To Expect

  The Catacombs of San Gaudioso are the second biggest in Naples and feature both ancient Christian artifacts and 17th century elements. On one side, there are the intense early Christian features such as the tomb of St. Gaudiosus with its frescoes and mosaics from the 5th and 6th centuries, while on the other hand, there are particular tombs reserved for nobles dating back to the 17th century when these catacombs began being used as a burial site again.

These catacombs preserve precious frescoes and mosaics that date back to the 5th and 6th centuries. These pieces contain emblems popularly used by early Christians, like fish, lambs, branches with grapes etc.

It is difficult to accurately ascertain how many chambers exist at present since these catacombs have gone through numerous modifications over time. After they were abandoned, 'Lave dei Vergini' blocked access to some areas; other parts were transformed or filled in order for a church to be constructed.

During its 17th century usage mainly aristocrats and clergymen had their graves here. A special protocol was followed during entombment: skulls were displayed along walls of ambulatory whereas rest of body was painted usually in clothes along with instruments which symbolized social status of deceased.

Giovanni Balducci who was an artist took no payment for painting frescoes but demanded that he should be laid to rest among aristocrats at Catacombs. The main entrance & ticket office is situated at Santa Maria della Sanità Basilica Piazza Sanità n°5 from where you can also visit Catacombs di San Gennaro free of cost after buying single ticket.

Visits last one hour & 4 departures take place daily between 10am & 1pm (Mon- Sun). You need not pre-book your slot but ensure sufficient time so that you reach before start of tour.

Tips: Wear comfortable shoes & carry a sweater even if weather is warm(temp varies b/w 16-22°C).
