What To Expect
The two levels of the Catacombs of San Gennaro are distinct, and boast much larger spaces than their more popular Roman counterparts. This is because the tuff used for construction was easier to work with and stronger.
The catacombs' original nucleus dates back to the 2nd century AD, probably as a tomb for a noble family that provided space for Christian members afterwards. In the 4th century AD, it was further expanded with the addition of an underground basilica dedicated to Saint Agrippinus – its nave carved out from tuff stone still preserves a bishop's chair and altar where devotees could see and touch the saint's remains.
The lower catacomb follows a reticulated structure around the Basilica di Sant'Agrippino; its vast chambers with ceilings up to 6 metres high house a baptismal font commissioned by Bishop Paul II when he took refuge in them during iconoclastic struggles.
Meanwhile, the upper catacomb originated from an ancient tomb from 3rd century AD that holds some of Southern Italy's earliest Christian paintings. Expansion began after San Gennaro's remains were moved here in 5th century; this turned it into both a pilgrim site and sought-after burial place.
Examples of these expansions include Crypt of Bishops where city bishops are interred, and majestic Basilica Adjecta – an underground three-naved basilica built after said transfer.
Accessible through Madre del Buon Consiglio Basilica (Via Capodimonte 13), tours last an hour each, departing almost hourly Monday through Saturday (10AM - 5PM) or Sunday (10AM - 2PM). No pre-booking required but please arrive on time.
Practical tips: Comfortable shoes and a sweater are recommended even in warmer weather due to temperatures ranging between 15°C and 22°C inside these sites.
