    The first Tombolo works perhaps date back to 1400; it was work carried out with rudimentary tools (spindles made from animal bones and fish bones used like pins).

    Many European countries vie for credit for being the birthplace of this art (Germany, France, Italy, Flanders); but Italy was the first center of diffusion thanks to the activity of the Venetian merchants.
