Pompeii, an Italian city which has been preserved in its ancient Roman state, can be found in Campania, 14 miles (23 km) southeast of Naples. It was constructed on the spur of a prehistoric lava flow north of the Sarnus River's mouth. In 79 CE Mount Vesuvius erupted violently and destroyed Pompeii and neighboring communities such as Herculaneum, Stabiae, Torre Annunziata. The ruins are a unique document to experience Greco-Roman life and have gained UNESCO World Heritage site status since 1997.
