Underground Rome, Catacombs, the Appian way and Roman Castles (8hrs)

Duration

clock8 hours

Overview

The discovery of a city built over its own ruins. The eternal city always has something extraordinary to offer you and we will take you to visit the treasures hidden under the level of modern Rome.
San Clemente is perhaps the most famous basilica for its underground levels. In addition to medieval mosaics and Renaissance paintings on the first level, the visit will take you to the lower levels until the first century after Christ.
Your driver will take you outside the Aurelian walls (third century after Christ) to the Appian way, the oldest consular road built by the Romans. You can admire the pavement of the ancient road (fourth century before Christ), the ruins of the tomb of Cecilia Metella and the villa of the Emperor Massenzio, before heading towards the Catacombs of San Callisto. After the Catacombs your driver will take you to Castel Gandolfo to take some pictures at the wonderful Lake Albano and you can have lunch at a local restaurant with wine tasting.
