The origin of the Amalfi is not sure. The city may have originated from Latin: Melfi, a Lucan sea village abandoned by Roman people in IV century AC or maybe from Roman gens Amarfia, that lived in I century AC. A legend explained that the name comes from Amalfi, a nymph loved by Hercules who was buried there as a desire of the gods. The city is best known for its picturesque streets and a mountain-ringed setting that can be explored on foot or admired from the sea. Some popular locations in Amalfi include; Amalfi Cathedral, Villa Rufolo, Museum of Paper, Cloister del Paradisco, Grotta dello Smelrado, Ruins of Roman Villa and Antiquarium amongst others.
