Anguilla is a British overseas territory in the Caribbean and one of the most northerly of the Leedward Islands. It consists of the island itself which is about 26 kilometers long and 5 kilometers wide at the widest point. Along with this there are many smaller islands and bays that don?t usually have people living on them. The total area contained within Anguilla is around 91 square kilometers and within this area approximately 14,000 people live. The first people who settled in the area were the Amerindian tribes who travelled from South America. There have been several artifacts found that date back to around 1300 BC and remains of settlements from as early as 600 AD. No one can quite place when the Europeans discovered the area. The name Anguilla is derived from the word ?eel? in several of the European languages, for example aiguille in French. Anguilla relies almost solely on tourism for its economy and the 2008 recession impacted the economy greatly.
The climate in Anguilla is cool and dry due to the north east trade winds.
