Auckland International Airport is located around 10 miles due south of the centre of Auckland itself in the town of Mangere. It is connected to the city via a new bridge, which also joins it to the rest of the New Zealand road network, and makes it easy to get from the airport into either the northern parts of the island where there are several tropical beach resorts, or the east of the island where wine making and volcanic landscapes await you. The airport is the main entry point for New Zealand Airlines, and as such is the busiest airport in the country.
One of the most remarkable things about New Zealand is the variety of different landscapes that can be found on the island. From coastal plains through to towering mountains, and from forests to stunning beaches. Hiring a car in Auckland will give you the freedom to explore the North Island at your own pace and let you see areas such as Rotorua with its volcanic landscape, or the Bay of a thousand islands to the north of the city. Bear in mind that if you want to visit the South Island you need to rent a separate car when you have travelled over the Cook Strait as the rental companies don?t allow you to take the cars from one island to the other.
There are two main areas for car hire at Auckland Airport. If you are arriving on a domestic flight, then you will find the car hire desks on the ground floor of the car park building opposite the Terminal . If you arrive on an Internationalflight, car rental desks are found in the arrivals hall after baggage claim. Car Hire at Auckland Airport is available from Avis, Budget , Europcar, Hertz and Thrifty.
From the centre of Auckland, you have a number of choices to get the airport. The simplest way is to join the Northern Motorway and head south to Manukau where you can turn west and join the south western motorway and follow the signs for the motorway. Alternatively, leave the motorway just outside Auckland in Remuera and join Path Road south to Hugh Watt Drive. When you reach the coast, turn left and cross the Mangere Bridge before turning right at David Longe Park onto the airport approach road.
