Bracknell is a town of about 50,000 located in Berkshire, approximately 45 kilometers west of London, England. It has a long history dating back to 942AD. In 1949 it was designated as a "new town" and began an extensive renovation leaving very little of the old Bracknell remaining. A few of the old pubs do remain because of historical significance that attracts tourists. These include the Red Lion, Old Manor, and the Bull.
Bracknell is composed of several neighborhoods at the center of which is a church, several small shops, a school, and a pub. This lends a quaint atmosphere to the area reminiscent of the town's heritage. The neighborhoods vary in size from 3000 to 9000 and are segregated from industrial areas by a ring road. The town has several leisure centers which support a variety of sports activities both professional and amateur so no matter of your level of experience in a certain sport, you should be able to engage in a few adrenalin pumping activities.
Bracknell is home to many high tech businesses such as Dell, Hewlett-Packard, Fujitsu, and Cable and Wireless. Other major industrial leaders include Waitrose and BMW Group. This has created a number of jobs in the surrounding area which has contributed to its expansion beyond the originally planned 1,000 hectares. Bracknell has a thriving art community and has been used as the backdrop for several TV shows and movies, including Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone. This is at least one reason for tourists to come and visit the city of Bracknell
Through its two railway stations Bracknell has become a major commuter center for Reading to the west and London to the east. There is also an excellent roadway system enabling vehicular traffic easy access to and from the town. A local bus service is available as well.
