Before doing anything else, you should give your car a once-over for any damage or defects as soon as you get to it. Report any you find to the provider and make sure they have documented it, otherwise you could later find yourself charged for the very same damage. Also, return the car with the same fuel level as it had when you picked it up, or the company might decide to bill you for this fuel at a higher price than it would cost at the pump.
Understand the rules of the road in your destination and abide by them. You should always drive responsibly, exactly as you would at home – no drinking and driving, no texting behind the wheel, and no driving while tired.
Five car hire providers offer their services at Faro Airport. You will find their desks just outside the terminal building. We recommend booking in advance to get the best possible deals, rather than booking a car once you arrive at the airport.

You’ll need to produce certain documents and meet some conditions before hiring a car at Faro Airport. Usually, you need to be 19 and to have held your licence for at least one year. There may be a young driver’s surcharge for under 25s. Often, a driver’s licence from your own country is sufficient, but non-EU drivers will also require an International Driving Permit (IDP).
Some insurance is usually provided with your car hire price, in the form of a Collision Damage Waiver or Theft Cover. This would, unfortunately, not fully protect you in the event of an accident, as you would still need to pay a large excess. To avoid this, you could buy some excess insurance straight from your provider, but it’s invariably cheaper to get it from a dedicated specialist such as insurance4carhire.com. This would also offer protection for such areas as the undercarriage, windscreen and tyres.
Faro Airport is situated 4 km (2.5 miles) to the west of Faro, Portugal, and offers easy access to the popular tourist area of the Algarve. This makes it a great base from which to hire a car to make the most of your holiday. The airport processes around 6 million passengers per year and first opened in 1965. Since then, it has seen a new terminal building unveiled in 1989 and an expansion in 2001. Due to the extreme popularity of the airport during the summer months (March to October), authorities are working hard to further increase the capacity to 8 million passengers per year. Currently, there are 36 boarding gates and 60 check-in desks. The terminal features a few shops and cafes, a porter service, and left luggage facilities.
There is an information desk in the public area of the main building (contact: +351 289 800 617) which provides advice on flights, opening hours, disabled facilities and public transport timetables. The Portugal Tourism desk in the arrivals hall offers information on local attractions (contact: +351 289 818 582).
