Girona Airport (also called Girona-Costa Brava airport) is based in the north-east of Spain. The airport is just 7.8 miles from Girona. However, it is also only 57 miles from Barcelona, so it is a great alternative airport one of the most popular tourist destinations in Spain. Five million go through the airport every year, and one of the main reasons is because Ryanair operates 62 routes from this airport.
As mentioned, the airport is less than 60 miles from Barcelona, but this is quite an expensive taxi trip so if you are going to Barcelona, hiring a car is recommended. If you do decide to rent a car, then it is a much better idea to rent one well in advance of your trip otherwise you may end up missing out on the car that suits your needs. At the same time, renting a car as early as possible will save you the most money. Using a comparison website is always a good idea as well. Just remember to take other factors into account in order to get the best deal.
Unfortunately there are only four hire companies based at this airport, which is another reason why you should book well in advance. However, Avis, Hertz, Europcar and Auriga are the four, which is a positive because they are some of the larger ones.
If you are going to or from the airport, you will probably be using the N-11 highway at some point. However, if you are going to Barcelona, use the A-7 and those going or coming from Girona will use the C-25. Remember, if you are going to or coming from Barcelona, you should take at least 15 euros in change with you because there are some tolls.
