O.R Tambo International Airport is located in Kempton Park, around 20 miles northeast of the centre of Johannesburg. It is the main hub for Internationaltravel into South Africa, and has been designed to handle up to around 30 million passengers annually. As with most South African Airports, it was upgraded extensively in the run up to the 2010 World Cup, and as such is now one of the most modern and efficient airports in the world. The airport is the main base of operations for South African Airways, and also has direct flights to Europe from British Airways, Air France, Lufthansa and KLM.
By hiring a car at Johannesburg Airport, you make it very easy to get to some of the tourist destinations nearby including Sun City and the Kruger National Park. Although both of these destinations are several hours by road from Johannesburg, the drive is simple on modern roads, and is actually more convenient than flying. If you are planning to go on a self drive safari during your stay, speak to your car hire company to arrange the additional cover to make sure that you are insured within nature reserves.
All of the car hire companies operating at Johannesburg International Airport have their offices together just outside the main domestic Terminal building in the Parkade. Once you have collected your baggage, a shuttle service runs every 5 minutes from Internationalto domestic, and will drop you off to collect your car. You have a choice of 8 car hire companies at Johannesburg Airport to choose from: Avis, Budget , Europcar, Tempest, Thrifty, National, Hertz and First.
From the centre of Johannesburg, you should head east along the M2 to Germiston. From here, take a left turn onto N3 which takes you to Bedfordview. Leave the motorway and then join the R24 east and follow the signs for the airport which is approximately 10 miles away on the left hand side of the motorway.
