Kona International Airport is the one of the main airports on the Big Island of Hawaii ? or Hawaii itself. The airport is located on the west coast of the island at Keahole, which is a small coastal village. While the airport is neither as large nor as busy as Hilo ? the other airport on the Big Island, it is still served by many major airlines thanks to its convenient location close to the popular Hawaiian beach resorts of Kalaoa and Kailua Kona, which are both slightly to the south of the airport.
Hawaii?s big island is the largest and geologically newest of the Hawaiian islands, but is far from being the busiest, and the roads that snake around its coast and through the volcanic heart of the island are generally fairly quiet. Having your own car in Hawaii will free you up from the public tours that are offered by most of the resort hotels and allow you to explore for yourself. Compare prices for car hire at Kona in advance, and save money on your booking.
Due to its small size, the car hire desks at Kona Airport are not located at the Terminal , instead both the desks and baseyards are found near the car parking area for the airport a short distance away. There are continuous shuttle services that operate between the airport arrivals hall and the rental kiosks, and the journey is no more than 5 minutes. You can choose amongst Alamo, Avis, Budget , Dollar, Enterprise , National, Thrifty and Hertz when you book your Kona Car Rental Package.
From the popular resort towns of Kalaoa and Kailua Kona, getting to the airport is very straightforward. You should simply take the Kuakini Highway north along the coast and it will bring you straight to the airport. If you have been inland at Waikii, then you need to head west to the airport along the Mamalahoa Highway, which again runs directly into the airport Terminal building.
Information about departures and arrivals as well as comprehensive guides to airport services can be found on the Hawaii.gov/koa website, which also provides airport maps and Terminal guides.
