The Lake District is a region in North West England dominated by mountains and lakes. It’s situated in the county of Cumbria, with the most popular area being the Lake District National Park, which is the largest National Park in England and Wales. The area is around 35 miles across and is a product of the Ice Age.
The Lake District itself is split up into a number of different areas; the Northern Fells, the North Western Fells, the Western Fells, the Mid-Western Fells, the South-Western Fells, the South-Eastern Fells, the Far-Eastern Fells, the Eastern Fells and the Central Fells. The Western Fells is the area in which you will find Scafell Pike, which is England’s highest mountain. However, the main attraction of the Western Fells is Pillar Rock, along with Wastwater, which is England’s deepest lake.
In the Eastern Fells there is the impressive height of Red Screes, which overlooks Kirkstone Pass, a fantastic sight. As well as this you can also find the Helvellyn range in this area, which peaks at 951m and is the 3rd highest peak in the Lake District.
There are too many attractions to mention in the Lake District and often you will find many simply as you drive along. Throughout the Lake District there are many fine restaurants, many of which have been awarded Michelin Stars.
Due to the mountainous terrain of the Lake District it’s one of the dampest parts of the United Kingdom, with more than 80 inches of rain every year. However March through to July are the driest months, with the warmest weather, making hiking and trips in general ideal.
