Lesotho is a country located in southern Africa. The Kingdom is landlocked and surrounded by South Africa, with a population of over two million. The capital and largest city is Maseru and the local languages spoken are Sesotho and English. The country was a colony of the United Kingdom, however it gained independence from the U.K in 1966. The official currency of the country is the Lesotho Loti and the country observes South African Standard Time, which is two hours ahead of GMT.
Due to its rugged terrain Lesotho is great for walking and trekking holidays, with many walking trails in and around the capital, Maseru. It’s strongly recommended that you use a guide or map when hiking around Lesotho, because it’s very easy to get lost and be at the mercy of nature. You can get hiking guides at the Department of Land on Lerotholi Road in Maseru.
In terms of transportation Lesotho has limited rail infrastructure so the main way of getting around is by road or by air. There are more than two dozen airports in Lesotho, the biggest being Moshoeshoe I International Airport. Moshoeshoe I Internationalis located 11 miles from the centre of Maseru and offers flights to and from locations in southern Africa.
The climate in Lesotho is much like South Africa, however due to the mountainous nature of the country (with the lowest point in the country being 1,400 metres above sea level) the country experiences cooler temperatures than the rest of South Africa. In the summer months, between November and January, the temperatures reach around 30C, with regular thunderstorms and rainfall. In the winters the temperature falls quickly, often below freezing point for much of the winter, with snow common.
