Los Angeles International Airport, also known by its IATA code LAX is located around 16 miles southwest of the downtown area of LA in the district of Westchester. The airport is the Sixt busiest in the world, with more than 50 million passengers using it each year, and it is a major hub for both domestic and Internationaltraffic from around the world. The airport?s iconic Terminal main building is recognised around the world, but there are in fact 9 Terminal buildings spread across the 3.5 square miles of land occupied by the airport.
If there is any city in North America where a car is essential, then that is Los Angeles. The city itself is a sprawling affair that covers hundreds of square miles, and as a result, getting to see all of the different attractions requires a lot of driving. From Downtown LA, you need to drive for around half an hour to get to Long Beach, an hour more for the better parts of Venice or Malibu. Also consider Anaheim for Disneyland, Hollywood, and even a trip south to San Diego to cross the Mexican border. Roads are very busy at rush hour, so it makes sense to leave any driving until after about 10am to take advantage of them being quieter.
With so many Terminal buildings, it is inconvenient to have separate desks at each for the 10 car hire companies that operate at LAX, so all rental operations are based at the Off Airport Rental Car Terminal and there is a regular free shuttle service between Terminal buildings and the car hire desks. When you leave the arrivals hall, simply head to the purple signs showing a car with a key above it to get the free rental shuttle. You can get car hire at Los Angeles Airport from Advantage, Alamo, Avis, Budget , Dollar, Enterprise , Hertz, Payless, Fox, National and Thrifty.
From Downtown Los Angeles, take Route 105 south until you get to Willowbrook before joining the Century Freeway which heads due west to the airport Terminal . Be careful to follow the signs for LAX rather than airport, as you pass a smaller airport along the road. From the tourist areas along the coast such as Malibu, you should simply take the Pacific Coast Highway (Route 1) to Santa Monica where it becomes the Lincoln Boulevard which leads direct to the north entrance the airport.
