Make sure you know the rules of the road in your destination. These are different between states, so read up on all the ones you plan to visit. Be a responsible driver just like you would at home – don’t drink and drive, no talking on the phone while driving and take regular rest stops.

You’ll need to show certain documents when collecting your car. Generally, the age at which you can hire a car is 21, although Avis caters to 18-years-old while Hertz requires you to be over 25. You should produce your Driver’s Licence from your home country – it needs to be photographic so whip your passport out if there’s no photo. Also, you have to have an International Driver’s Permit (IDP) which needs to be obtained before you fly to America.
There’ll be some insurance provisions given with your car hire, but check out exactly what is included. There might not be any third party cover, and it may only apply in New York State even if there is. Normally, there would be a Collision or Loss Damage Waiver, but you would still need to pay an excess in case of any damage. For this reason, you should consider buying excess insurance from an independent body such as insurance4carhire.com.
Newark is one of the world’s busiest airports and one of New York’s trio of international airports alongside JFK and La Guardia. Sitting 16 miles from midtown Manhattan, you can access the city via hire car or use it as a base from which to venture further afield. It handled 35.6 million passengers in 2014. The airport was first opened in 1928 as the US’s first major airport. After being slightly eclipsed by JFK, it has seen a huge expansion programme in the last decade. There are three runways and a helipad, and three terminals. A state-of-the-art monorail connects the terminals and the parking lots and rental car facilities. All terminals feature shops, bars, restaurants, information points and other services. There is also a Marriott hotel on the premises with a shuttle bus to the terminals. Over 30 airlines use the airport.
Information desks can be found in Terminals B and C, offering a host of facilities including hotel and theatre bookings, currency exchange, and sightseeing information. There are also information points in the baggage areas of all three terminals offering assistance on ground transportation.
