Things to be Consider Hiring a Car?

The first thing to do before you take off in your car to explore beautiful Italy is to ensure your vehicle is free of any faults and isn’t damaged in any way. If you should find anything, report it to the hire company and make sure it gets documented, to avoid any later charge. You should return the car with the same level of fuel as when you hired it. Again, this will circumvent any future charges, which would likely be higher than the price of fuel on the forecourt.

Understand the rules of the road in your destination and follow them. You should always be a responsible driver, just like at home – no drinking and driving, texting while driving, or driving tired.

There are six car hire companies with branches at Fiumicino. They are found in the Domestic and International Arrival Halls. Although you can turn up and hire a car, it’s much more economical to book in advance online.

Before You Go

Certain documents must be produced at the rental office before you collect your car. You must have both a valid driving licence from your home country (if from the UK, show both the photocard and paper part) as well as an International Driving Permit (IDP). Not all providers will ask for the IDP, but if you should happen to be stopped by the police you’ll face a hefty fine for not having it.

How to Buy Car Insurance

When hiring a car in Italy, you usually get some cover included with the price such a Collision Damage Waiver or Theft Cover, but this does not constitute adequate insurance as you’ll still need to pay a large excess should you be involved in an accident. It’s highly advised to buy some excess insurance from another provider such as insurance4carhire.com, which would also cover you for damage to areas such as the tyres, windows, and undercarriage.

General Information & Tips on Car Hire

Fiumicino, also known as Leonardo da Vinci International Airport, is the main airport serving Rome and one of the busiest transport hubs in the world. It is the eighth busiest airport in Europe, with 38.6 million travellers passing through in 2014. Located in the coastal town of Fiumicino, it is 35 km (21.7 miles) south-west of Rome city centre. The expansive airport covers an area of 29 km² (7,200 acres) and is well named after the genius da Vinci, who came up with a prototype helicopter and a winged flying machine in 1480. The airport was officially opened in 1961 to supplement Rome’s old Ciampino airport, which is still in operation for some budget airlines, although it had actually started operating in 1960 to help with traffic for that year’s Summer Olympics in Rome. There were two runways at first, and at the present time there are four. There are four terminals, although they are actually named T1, T2, T3 and T5. The terminals play host to facilities such as shops, restaurants, cafes, banks and conference rooms.

Usefull Information

Fiumicino features several manned information desks which also include self-service interactive information points for use outside hours. The desks can be found in the departures and arrivals areas of Terminals A and C and in the arrivals areas of Terminal B.
