The most important thing to do when collecting your car is to check it thoroughly for any damage or defects. If any should be found, report it immediately to the hire company and make sure they have a note of it, or else you could find yourself charged for it later. You should also return the car with the same amount of fuel as when you hired it, or you could likewise be charged for the missing fuel at an exaggerated cost.
Always make sure you know the road laws in your destination and stick to them. You should be a responsible driver, just like you are at home. Needless to say, never drink and drive, use your phone behind the wheel, or drive while tired.
You can choose from five car hire companies with desks in Tenerife North. Of course, you can wait until you get to the airport before booking your car, but it’s far more economical and time-saving to book in advance online.

You’ll need to meet a few conditions and produce certain documents when hiring a car in Spain. The usual required age for drivers is 22, but for some cars it’s 25. Also, there could be an upper age limit of around 65. If you’re from the EU, a valid driver’s licence from your country is often sufficient; if from elsewhere, you’ll also need an International Driving Permit (IDP). The names of all drivers need to be recorded on the hire agreement.
You usually get some basic insurance cover when you hire a car in Spain, albeit on top of the core price of rental. It takes the form of a Collision Damage Waiver or Theft Cover. However, this is not adequate insurance should you unfortunately become involved in an accident, as you would still have to pay a sizeable excess. In order to preclude this, you could buy some excess insurance directly from your provider, but it is always cheaper to get it from an outside specialist such as insurance4carhire.com. Some other costs might come on top of your hire, such as airport tax, air conditioning, and roof rack.
Tenerife Airport is one of two airports serving this bustling and popular Canary Island, the other being Tenerife South. Of the two, North is the older airport, being renamed from Los Rodeos Airport when South was established in 1978. It sits at a high elevation of 633m (2,077 feet) in San Cristobal de la Laguna, about 11 km (6.8 miles) west of Santa Cruz. It handles around 4 million passengers per year and offers connections to all the other Canaries as well as to Europe and North America. Its location makes it a great base from which to rent a car to explore this rugged, intriguing island. The airport’s history can be traced to the 1920s and 1930s, when the first aeroplane landed in the Los Rodeos field from Germany, followed by the first flight from Spain, even before the airport had been built. By 1946, there was a runway, terminal and hangars. A new terminal opened in 2002, with four storeys and 12 gates, as well as a car park and motorway access ramps. There are also cafes and restaurants, shops, a bank, currency exchange, ATMs, and a VIP Lounge.
An information desk is found on the ground floor of the terminal, in the arrivals hall, offering advice on flights and other services. It can be contacted on (+34) 91 321 10 00 / 902 404 704 / 922 635 999.
