Chiang Rai was the first capital of the Lanna Thai Kingdom and was founded in 1262 by King Meng Rai. In 1786, the city became a Thai territory and was proclaimed a province during King Rama VI's resign in 1910. Chiang Rai is a sleepy provincial town with a sleepy atmosphere, and it's strong Lanna identity has been retained through its collections of temples, cuisine, music and art.
