The first real settlement in Cocoa Beach, Florida was started by a family of newly freed slaves following the Civil War, but a hurricane in 1885 discouraged settlement. Then in 1888, a group of Cocoa men bought the entire tract of land. The land remained untouched until an attorney named Gus Edwards arrived. Cocoa Beach was named after the city Cocoa, which is believed to have gotten its name because mail was delivered by riverboat and used to be placed in a tin box labelled Baker’s Cocoa. Cocoa Beach is rich in surf history and is known for producing the 11-time world surfing champion, Kelly Slater. Some popular landmarks in Cocoa Beach include; Westgate Cocoa Beach Pier, Lori Wilson Park, Dinosaur Store, Florida Surf Museum, Cocoa Beach Skatepark, and The Florida Key Lime Pie Company, amongst others.
